In this special issue, we dig deep into a single important topic: the ketogenic diet. Often confused with Paleo (which is not inherently low-carb), keto is currently an incredibly popular diet with a couple hundred thousand searches for it through Google each month. Like most trending topics, however, there’s a lot of bad information about keto out there—some of which can be pretty dangerous.

In this issue, we aim to sort real information from Internet sensation so that folks who are interested in a ketogenic diet can decide for themselves whether it’s the best choice for them. We look at the pros and cons of the diet, as well as its potential applications for cancer treatment and prevention, longevity, brain health and cognitive function, women’s health, and athletic performance. Plus, we break down the diet for different lifestyles and genetic makeups to help you determine whether keto is something that may potentially help you reach your goals.

As we’re sure longtime readers of Paleo Magazine already know, diets are extremely individual, and keto is no different. What works for one person may not work for someone else, and vice versa. Let’s not forget that, for every person who has found success with a high-fat/low-carb diet, there’s another who’s thrived with a low-fat/high-carb diet.

However one thing remains true no matter what dietary regimen we decide to follow: We must fully commit. To reap the benefits of any diet—and, more importantly, to avoid injury and illness—one should do diligent research, carefully experiment, and possibly even enlist a professional to make sure the diet is a healthy choice for their particular lifestyle and health. Without taking these steps, it’s very difficult to determine whether a specific diet truly works for us as individuals.

Our hope is that this issue will be a good first step for you in that research. The information in these pages provides a wide range of information on keto—the good stuff and the not-so-good stuff—that should help you determine whether it’s something that appeals to you and is ideal for your goals and current health, and whether you may want to seek out a professional to help you navigate it.
