Walking—The Truest Form of Paleo Exercise

When I was in my teens, I remember thinking that walking didn’t really qualify as “exercise.” Back then, I was doing lots of sports and went regularly to my local gym, where I lifted heavy weights and did high-intensity stints on the rowing machine. These were what I considered “real exercise.” In my mind, walking was an ineffectual form of physical activity, best suited to the elderly. I didn’t believe…

Does Recent TMAO Research Suggest That the Paleo Diet Causes Heart Disease?

Detractors of the Paleo diet often mention how it may increase a molecule called trimethylamine N-oxide, or TMAO, which has been correlated with disease states. Proponents of a vegan diet use TMAO as rationale for avoiding animal protein, like Dr. Joel Kahn did recently during a highly publicized debate with Paleo advocate Chris Kresser. In recent weeks, unpublished data from a group of researchers in Australia has received media attention…

Luck-Stuffed Sweet Potatoes with Maple Tahini Drizzle

When the clocks strike midnight on New Year’s Eve, we all hope for a little extra luck for the year ahead. In Spain, this luck is ensured only if you eat 12 grapes as the bell tolls—one for each month of the year. To avoid this tradition is to put the fate of your year at extreme risk. While you might not be too keen on quickly shoveling 12 grapes…

Float. Freeze. Listen. Walk. Alternatives to Traditional Meditation

Mindfulness is a word heard frequently in the world of health and fitness, and meditation is often touted as a way to achieve a mindful state. More than just a cool way to chill or relax, meditation has scientifically proven physiological benefits. An eight-week course of meditation shrinks the amygdala, the region of the brain associated with the initiation of the body’s response to stress. Is Your Low-Carb Diet Wreaking Havoc on Your Gut Microbiome?

Low-carbohydrate diets continue to be a contentious subject, but they can be useful in certain applications. A well-designed low-carbohydrate diet can provide all the raw materials the body needs to function optimally; however, if not judiciously planned and implemented, it can wreak havoc on the endocrine and immune systems—and seriously detract from athletic performance. Over the past decade, research has revealed that an improperly designed low-carbohydrate diet can also inflict…

Why We Shouldn’t Rely Only on Animal Studies

In a recently released article, scientists studied “strongly heated carbohydrate-rich food” (i.e., French fries) and cancer risk. Frying potatoes produces a compound called acrylamide. Acrylamide has been theorized as a cancer-promoting compound. But more recent research has shown that high-acrylamide foods such as coffee do not, in fact, increase cancer risk. The authors of this study took the investigation further, however. They measured the micronucleus frequency of human erythrocytes in…

How Paleo Could Transform Medicine

Let’s assume that, after being Paleo for a while, you now “get” what the whole ancestral-health journey is all about. Special Issue! Keto: The definitive guide

Available now! (in stores only)

110+ pages
20 keto recipes
$11.99US/$13.99CAN

In this special issue, we dig deep into a single important topic: the ketogenic diet. Often confused with Paleo (which is not inherently low-carb), keto is currently an incredibly popular diet with a couple hundred thousand searches for it through Google each month. Like most trending topics, however, there’s a lot of bad information about keto out there—some of which can be pretty dangerous.

In this issue, we aim to sort real information from Internet sensation so that folks who are interested in a ketogenic diet can decide for themselves whether it’s the best choice for them. We look at the pros and cons of the diet, as well as its potential applications for cancer treatment and prevention, longevity, brain health and cognitive function, women’s health, and athletic performance. Plus, we break down the diet for different lifestyles and genetic makeups to help you determine whether keto is something that may potentially help you reach your goals.

As we’re sure longtime readers of Paleo Magazine already know, diets are extremely individual, and keto is no different. What works for one person may not work for someone else, and vice versa. Let’s not forget that, for every person who has found success with a high-fat/low-carb diet, there’s another who’s thrived with a low-fat/high-carb diet.

However one thing remains true no matter what dietary regimen we decide to follow: We must fully commit. To reap the benefits of any diet—and, more importantly, to avoid injury and illness—one should do diligent research, carefully experiment, and possibly even enlist a professional to make sure the diet is a healthy choice for their particular lifestyle and health. Without taking these steps, it’s very difficult to determine whether a specific diet truly works for us as individuals.

Our hope is that this issue will be a good first step for you in that research. The information in these pages provides a wide range of information on keto—the good stuff and the not-so-good stuff—that should help you determine whether it’s something that appeals to you and is ideal for your goals and current health, and whether you may want to seek out a professional to help you navigate it.

Contributors to this special issue include –

Weedkiller Roundup Found in Kids’ Breakfast Cereals

Whoo boy . . . a new round of tests by the Environmental Working Group found the weedkiller glyphosate, more commonly known as Roundup, in every single breakfast cereal sample tests. That’s 28 different cereals!

From the EWG:

The tests detected glyphosate in all 28 samples of products made with conventionally grown oats. All but two of the 28 samples had levels of glyphosate above EWG’s health benchmark of 160 parts per billion, or ppb.

Products tested by Anresco Laboratories in San Francisco included 10 samples of different types of General Mills’ Cheerios and 18 samples of different Quaker brand products from PepsiCo, including instant oatmeal, breakfast cereal and snack bars. The highest level of glyphosate found by the lab was 2,837 ppb in Quaker Oatmeal Squares breakfast cereal, nearly 18 times higher than EWG’s children’s health benchmark.

Read more in the EWG’s report at EWG.org.

Fermented Dairy Products May Protect Against Heart Attacks, According to New Study

A new study out of Finland has found that men who eat large amounts of fermented dairy products are at lower risk for coronary heart disease than men who eat only small amounts. Also noteworthy is that consumption of non-fermented dairy products was associated with a higher risk of heart disease, which tracks with the Paleo principle of avoiding most, but not necessarily all, dairy.

More from the abstract:

After adjusting for potential confounders, those in the highest (v. lowest) intake quartile of fermented dairy products had 27 % (95 % CI 5, 44; P-trend=0·02) lower risk of CHD. In contrast, those in the highest intake quartile of non-fermented dairy products had 52 % (95 % CI 13, 104; P-trend=0·003) higher risk of CHD. When analysed based on fat content, low-fat (<3·5 % fat) fermented dairy product intake was associated with lower risk (hazard ratio in the highest quartile=0·74; 95 % CI 0·57, 0·97; P-trend=0·03), but high-fat fermented dairy and low-fat or high-fat non-fermented dairy products had no association. These results suggest that fermented and non-fermented dairy products can have opposite associations with the risk of CHD.

What Do You Smell Like? It Depends on Your Microbiome . . .

Human body-odor formation is greatly affected by the structure and activity of human-associated microbial communities. In other words, the trillions of microorganisms that colonize your body heavily influence your body’s smell. You have a unique body odor partly because of your unique microbiome, which is shaped by environmental forces as well as by your genetics. Your body odor reveals a lot about your health. Five Things Vegans and Paleo Dieters Have in Common

Vegans and Paleo dieters are sometimes regarded as two distinct human communities, with diametrically opposed ideologies. Some may even suggest that these two health-conscious groups have declared war on each other: a war waged not with guns, toxic chemicals, or armed fighter planes, but rather with computers and film cameras. The opposing camps both produce documentaries, articles, scientific papers, and infographics in which they promote their respective nutrition- and health-focused…

Are Protein Requirements Significantly Underestimated?

“How much protein do I actually need?” If you ask a typical dietitian this question, they’ll likely answer 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight per day (this being the RDA, or Recommended Dietary Allowance). The Unintended Consequences of White Noise Machines

In our February/March 2018 issue, we published an article, “The Lost Sounds of Silence,” in which Alison Main explored the harm caused by noise pollution from various sources.

A review published last month in the journal JAMA Otolaryngology lends credence to the idea that one of these sources, white noise machines, may be doing more harm than good, especially for people with tinnitus.

According to lead author Dr. Mouna Attarha:

“In the past 50 years, brain scientists have learned a great deal about brain plasticity—how sensory and other inputs change the brain chemically, structurally, and functionally. Increasing evidence shows that the brain rewires in a negative manner when it is fed random information, such as white noise. Neural inhibition (the ability to filter unimportant information) is reduced; temporal integration times (how quickly the brain processes rapidly changing signals) lengthen; and cortical representations (how information is represented in the brain) lose precision.”

The study’s authors go on to urge the use of structured sounds—like speech and music—to mask tinnitus symptoms, rather than the unstructured sound produced by white noise machines.
